Education System in Peru
"Trabajamos para que todos los peruanos y peruanas puedan ejercer su derecho a la educación"
We work so that all Peruvians can exercise their right to education. -Ministry of Education of Peru
General
In 1996, free public education for all students between the ages of 6 and 15 was implemented. There are also many private schools. Both public and private schools follow a national curriculum, set by the Ministry of Education. There are four main levels: primary, secondary, vocational and technical, and university.
Schedule
The academic year runs from March through November/December. March is fall. Winter break is in July. December to February is summer. So I will be there in the fall at the start of the school year.
Progression
-
1 year of pre-school, age 5 (educación inicial)
-
6 years of primary school, age 6-11 (educación primaria)
-
5 years of secondary school, ages 12-16 (educación secundaria)
-
2 years of general education studies
-
3 years of either academic secondary (arts or science) or technical secondary education
-
-
Post secondary ranging from 2 to 5 years or University (public for free or private)
Curriculum
Subjects in the primary grades include math, science and environment, art, physical education, and religious education. Some subjects that differ from what I have experienced include communications and personal development. As for the secondary level, the subjects from primary school are continued, along with some new additions. Foreign language (commonly English or indigenous), history, civics, social skills, and elective/personal studies are part of secondary schooling.
Teacher Preparation
Teaching programs are offered at both the higher institutes of technology as a 5-year program and at universities.
Special Education
From my research, I gathered that students with special needs are in no way looked down upon, but they simply don't have the resources to give these students adequate support. There are a few schools dedicated to special education. Learning disabilities are also not focused on either due to a lack of resources. Understanding that some students are not getting the support they need, and probably won't, will be a challenge for me after my experience with the special education programs I have encountered here in the United States.
Assessment
I did not find many explicit details on assessment, but I did find some evidence of standardized testing. The ECE, or the Evaluación Censal de Estudiantes is for all students and covers multiple subjects.
