It’s been a while, but here’s what I’ve been up to lately! With week 5 officially over, I’m more than halfway through my time here in Peru. Easter, flying home, and graduation are all coming way too fast. It’s easy to get wrapped up in thinking about what’s coming next, but I’m trying my best to live in the moment here. School really picked up for me a few weeks ago (hence the lack of blogging) and I finally did some shopping here in Lima over the weekend. After moving to three different classrooms the first three weeks of school, my cooperating teacher and I finally had the chance to start decorating the classroom. I love crafty things and it was fun to get involved in tasks specific to the beginning of the year. We made a few quotes, a place to post birthdays, and areas to display work from different classes around the room. The classroom is a lot brighter and displays student work.
That weekend, I slept in on Saturday and had a nice big breakfast. I then headed to a mall called Larcomar for a few hours. I love shopping and this mall is beautiful. It’s a little pricier than what I have been seeing here since it's definitely aimed at tourists. Nevertheless, I found a few things for myself (including new sun glasses since mine broke like the second week I was here) and ate lunch before returning home. I spent the rest of the day doing some school work and relaxing. On Sunday, I spent time with my host family. We went out for lunch and ice cream.
The next week, my lesson plan load went down a little because of monthly testing. Students are given kind of a check up test in all subjects once a month. I got to help create, administer, and evaluate the tests. I also learned that grading scales are very different. In the US, we usually base things off of 100, whether that be points or a percentage. Here in Peru, they use the number 20 to evaluate everything. It’s something I never realized would be different in other places.
It’s short and sweet this time, but stay tuned for an exciting blog post after my adventures for Semana Santa (the week leading up to Easter). ¡Ciao!
